The Battle with Scale

The Battle with Scale

People often refer to their dieting efforts as a constant battle with the scale. The use of this kind of terminology really reveals a defeatist attitude. It shows that they expect to fail. Imagine a sprinter talking about his upcoming Olympic gold medal race as a battle with his feet or a war against the track conditions. That’s hardly the kind of speech one would expect to hear from a top competitor who expects to win every time they go out on the track.

In an endeavor like dieting and weight loss where an individual is trying to establish a new healthy lifestyle and to break old habits, motivation is everything. While a positive mental outlook isn’t going to lose the weight for them, it can make it much easier to take the steps necessary to be successful. In any long term effort, there are high points and low points. Sometimes, one might not feel like going to the gym or they might really want a big piece of chocolate cake. It is during these hardest moments that a positive attitude can mean the difference between giving up or finding the extra willpower to stay the course and resist temptation.

A diet is not a battle with the scale. That makes it seem as though forces that are beyond the dieter’s control hold the biggest influence over their success or failure. That simply isn’t the case. Dieting is about taking personal responsibility for your actions and for the results of those actions. If you eat a certain amount of calories each day, and follow a good exercise program diligently, then the pounds will fall away over time. If on the other hand, you stop in at a fast food restaurant for lunch because it’s more convenient, then the pounds will add on. The outcome is the cumulative result of every decision you make each day.

Stepping on the scales to monitor your progress is important, but if you are honest with yourself about the choices you’ve made all week long, then you should know what the scales will reveal even before your step on them. While individual weight varies from day to day or even hour to hour, base don hydration levels and a host of other short term factors, it is the long term trend that matters. The scale is not the enemy, it is instead, our own actions that determine whether we ourselves are our strongest ally or whether we are our own worst enemy when it comes to dieting. The attitude we bring to the game is one of the earliest indicators of which side we’re really on.
