How to Buy Lingerie as a Gift

Let’s be honest, sometimes men can be downright clueless when it comes to gift giving. It’s like they’re trying to read Euripides’ plays in the original Greek. I used to give them the benefit of the doubt and think that if they tried really hard, they could come up with great gift ideas for the women in their lives. That is, of course, until my husband gave me a new washing machine for our anniversary and I gave up on that notion altogether. Yes, it was practical and necessary. I almost understood his reasoning behind thinking a washer as an anniversary gift was a good idea. It would make my life and housework easier to have one of the newer, more state of the art machines. But in my heart, I recoiled at the idea that he could only associate an appliance with our anniversary.

So to save fellow women from experiencing the frustration and disappointment of receiving a blender on your birthday or something equally pragmatic and unappealing, a word of advice to men: if you want to get the lady in your life an awesome gift, buy her lingerie.

Don’t panic guys; it really is not as daunting as it sounds. You don’t have to necessarily go traipsing through the frighteningly feminine lingerie sections of the larger department stores, or the frilly specialty stores where it feels like all eyes are on you. Shopping online for lingerie will still get the job done, but without taking you out of your comfort zone. That still leaves the question of how you actually go about shopping for lingerie as a gift for the special woman in your life. There are a few important things to keep in mind as you shop.

The first thing to remember about buying lingerie is to know her size. If you two are living together, this should be relatively easy to find out. Venture to look into the top drawer of her dresser and spy out the land. Bra sizes are a number followed by a letter. Remembering both the number and the letter is very important, as this is the entire size. Chemises, camisoles and panties will either be a number (5, 6, 7, 8) or a letter (S-XL). If you cannot find out her size, then please underestimate and don’t overestimate. Things will go so much better if you buy her a size too small rather than a size too large. That would mean that you think she’s bigger than she actually is, and none of us wants the man in our life to think that.

The second thing to remember is finding lingerie that fits her style and tastes. Take into account the clothing she usually wears and this may give you some guidelines. If she is usually conservative, don’t go for anything too racy. If she has a penchant for frills, go for a lacy selection. It would help to know her favorite color too, or at least the color she looks best in. Take note of the return policy of the store you purchase from just in case she needs to exchange the size. But even if she does have to exchange the size or color, she’ll still love it more than an appliance.
