Louisiana State
The history of Louisiana is long and rich. The first settlers were the Native American Indians, who had been settled at such places in Louisiana as Poverty Point and Watson Brake for upwards of thousands of years. The European settlers made their debut in Louisiana in the 16th century, effectively ending the homeland rule for Native American Indians.
French settlers had been in Louisiana since approximately 1528. These early French settlers explored much of the surrounding area, including the Mississippi River and parts of the Gulf Coast. France’s early interest in Louisiana gave the area a distinctly otherworldly feel, and this influence has lasted far into modern day times and is part of its charm.
There were many other settlers for different nationalities interested in Louisiana. German and Spanish explorers soon made parts of Louisiana and Louisiana history their own through extensive exploration.
Louisiana became a state of the nation in 1812, after being sold to the United States by Napoleon Bonaparte. This made it the 18th state in the Union. Following the secession and Civil War, Louisiana was welcomed back into the Union as a melting pot state, creolized by many different nationalities and beliefs.
The history of Louisiana has always been brightly colored by the city of New Orleans, which defies most conventional traditions every Mardi Gras. But this history is one Louisiana is famous for, bringing in tourists every year. Thousands of people make Louisiana history and the streets of its cities their own, proving it to have a rich and diverse culture.
