First Job in Food Service

How many teenagers do you think take a first job in the food service industry? In America, I’d say plenty. Some work for fast food, some as bus boys, and some as waiters and waitresses, but plenty of American teens got their feet wet as a working person in this capacity. I was no exception.

My first job was in the food service department at Six Flags Over Texas. I started there when I was only a fifteen year old high school sophomore. By the time I left, I was nineteen and a sophomore at a local university. That first job served me very well.

My first assignment there was at a corn dog stand named Newman’s. I started out mostly running the cash register. This was the last thing any employee that knew better wanted to do, but I loved it. My job was just what you would expect. I entered the order in the cash register, collected the customer’s money, and gave back change. It was not rocket science, but I enjoyed talking to the people.

One note on the cashier duties, you had to report to the stand and then get a signed slip from the manager that authorized you to go get a till, which was essentially a bag of cash. You then turned around and went to the Cash Control building to request said bag from the agents behind the locked door and bulletproof glass. I can’t blame them for the security measures. They transferred a lot of money on a daily basis there.

One of the worst things that could happen was you ran out of a certain denomination of bill (usually ones) or coin (usually quarters). Exciting, huh? The other thing that could go wrong was running out of register tape. The register was technically called a POS (or Point of Sale) terminal. It required POS tape and we had to make sure to keep that in stock under the counter or we couldn’t use the machine.

After a few weeks on the job, I worked my way up to the serving line. It was a good way to still talk to the guests, as we called them, and not have to handle the money. That meant I wouldn’t have to leave the stand once I signed in.

After a few months, I got to cook the food. How exciting that was! All we served at my stand was corn dogs and french fries. We made the batter for the corn dogs from scratch then, which involved mixing a bag of dry cornmeal mix and water in a huge stand mixer. There was certainly an art to know when to add the water in. Rookies like me often ended up wearing more mix than seemed to stay in the bowl. Speaking of art, it certainly was a trick to dip the dogs. You had to turn your wrist just right to dip the hot dog with a wood stick in one end with out it slipping off into the batter. I learned to make the perfect corn dog and could still step up to the vat today.

That first job led to others, including my being the manager of my own stand, then supervisor over several. I often think about that first job and give thanks that I had that experience. I am sure that all of the other teens out there that also worked in food service have similar stories to share.

Get the Yard Ready

One thing that many people do not think of before they get a dog is the fact that dogs are escape artists who usually will not stay in the yard if there is any possibility of leaving. Whether you are getting a new dog, or moving into a new house and already have a dog, you need to make sure that your yard is absolutely secure so that the dog cannot get out. Dogs who escape from backyards have a nasty habit of running into the street or taking off and getting lost. If you do not want this to happen, you should take the time to prepare so that you do not have to worry whenever you let the dog out back.

Every backyard is different, but most of them have the same basic features. You will usually find a grass area, a patio, possibly some sort of garden, and everything surrounded by some type of fence. For some reason, whenever you put a dog out in a typical backyard, he will go right for the fence to try and find a way to get beyond it. Some fences are easier to prepare than others. Block walls are excellent barriers. They have no space between the wall and the ground, and the only access points are usually whatever yard entrance there is that is covered with a gate. To make this safe, you need to pay attention to the gate. Make sure that as little space as possible exists between the gate and the posts that the gate is attached to. If the dog can stick more than a nose through, it is too big. Also check how much space is between the gate and the ground. Dogs can often squeeze through small places. The gate should have no more than an inch between the bottom and the ground. If the gate path is concrete, you have no problems. If it is dirt, you would do best pouring some concrete or putting down some wood or other hard material to keep the dog from digging a hole.

Most of us have wood fences. While not as good as block walls, they do a good job. As long as the wood is not rotten and fence boards aren’t falling out, dogs usually cannot go through the fence. The big difficulty comes in making sure that the fence goes as close to the ground as possible. If a space exists between the wood and the ground, a crafty dog will find a way to capitalize. The dog will dig until the space is big enough to fit through, and then you have a chase on your hands. The best way to deal with this is to close the space between the fence and the ground all the way around the perimeter of the fence. Chicken wire, logs, bricks, rocks, or anything else you can block the space with will keep the pooch from digging out.

Spending time preparing your backyard will save you the trouble and heartache of having your dog escape. Nobody wants to go through that, so take the time to make it escape proof.

In this day and age, traveling is a necessity that most of us cannot avoid. Traveling for work is something that many of us cannot get out of. Traveling for vacation is often the only way to go someplace that you will truly enjoy. Even short distance travel, such as to and from work or school, takes place every day and requires us to lug computers, papers, books, and many other things back and forth. Because we are on the go so much, we need luggage and bags that will keep up with us and be there when we need them.

Anybody who travels long distances, whether for business or pleasure, knows the value of a good set of luggage. If you have ever tried to travel with a cheap bag, you know what kind of hassles can occur. You might know the embarrassment that comes with watching your bag come out of the luggage chute at baggage claim in the airport and seeing it open to have all of your clothes and other belongings spill out. You might know what a pain in the rear having a wheel fall off of your bag can be when you are late for a flight and trying to drag your luggage behind you as fast as possible. You might be familiar with the utter frustration that can come with a backpack strap breaking, forcing you to carry the bag on one shoulder until you can fix it. Or you might know the anger that follows having the handle break off of your briefcase, making the item utterly useless for carrying anything, as you then have to carry it with both hands.

Yes, we all want bags that look good, but if they do not work when you need them, you have wasted your time and money. A quality bag is the difference between getting to your destination on time, without stress, and having your entire vacation ruined because all you can think about is the catastrophe that happened in the airport when your bag broke open.

When looking for a bag, you want to make sure that it will handle the stress that you intend to put it through. You should find a material that will not tear or wear out.
